Der Song erzählt die angelsächsische Legende von Beowulf, einem gautischen Helden.
Erst tötet Beowulf in Dänemark das menschenfressende Monster Grendel und dessen Mutter. Jahrzehnte später stellt er sich, selbst zum König aufgestiegen, dem Kampf gegen einen Drachen, der sich an den Menschen für den Diebstahl eines goldenen Kelches aus seinem Schatz rächt. Der Drache wird getötet, doch auch Beowulf erliegt seinen Verletzungen.
